Throughout the school, and on all levels, students are challenged, supported and encouraged in accordance with our core value of companionship. The various Support Services at St. John’s are part of this approach, working closely with all teachers in a shared purpose of enabling the individual student to thrive physically, academically, creatively and personally.This we do in the belief that every student should be enabled to achieve personal excellence.
The Learning Support program is open to all students who have learning differences or difficulties, or who are failing to achieve their full potential in their school work. Programs typically focus on providing support in the core academic areas and organizational skills as we work together towards the goal of successful, rewarding academic learning. Teaching is provided either in small groups or as in-class support as appropriate.
The acquisition of English as an Additional Language is recognized as requiring special provision for some students whose first or current academic language is not English. Teaching staff determine the need for additional help in English language acquisition, and language support is provided as appropriate. The level of teaching is adjusted to each student’s needs, with a balanced emphasis on the language comprehension and production demanded by their classes.
The Guidance Departments in the 3 sections of the school monitor, guide and support students in matters of academic placement and programs in school. They also offer advice on approaches to learning and monitor and support student well-being. In the High School, the Guidance Counselors help with choices and applications for tertiary education. All the Guidance Counselors are available for individual and confidential consultations with any student seeking or requiring personal or guidance counseling.
The School Psychologist works school-wide and offers consultations for specific concerns regarding emotional or psychological well-being.
The services of Speech and Language therapists and an Occupational Therapist are available upon request from teachers and parents. Therapy sessions can be arranged during or after the school day. The speech and occupational therapists work on a free-lance basis; therefore their services incur an additional charge, not included in the school fees.
